Tackling Underage and Problem Drinking On College and University Campuses
through New and Innovative Partnerships

Overview

The International Institute for Alcohol Awareness (IIAA) is launching a multi-faceted program focused on preventing and reducing underage and problem drinking on college and university campuses. Funding and support for this program has been provided by Beam Global Spirits & Wine, Inc. This program encourages and provides guidance tools for university officials, law enforcement, local government officials, beverage alcohol retailers and others to act in a partnership to reduce underage and problem drinking and create a healthy learning environment in which students can excel.

Inside this packet you will find educational materials to help you understand the issues related to underage and problem drinking, including the challenges and potential solutions. In addition, this packet contains a general resource list of Internet sites with helpful information to address underage and problem drinking. Separate information related to each of the following seven target audiences has been expanded to include useful samples available on the Internet:

  • Presidents/Administrators
  • Students
  • Parents
  • Faculty/Staff
  • Law Enforcement
  • Community Members
  • Beverage Alcohol Retailers

Finally, this site includes sample documents that can be adapted to address the specific issues impacting your campus community. Regularly updated sample documents and other resources will be added over time to assist college and university communities.

Underage and Problem Drinking on campus and in the community surrounding a college or university is a complicated, multi-faceted issue, as was evident in the 2002 report, A Call to Action: Changing the Culture of Drinking at U.S. College, developed by a Task Force on College Drinking through the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). There is no single response or strategy that will erase or prevent the potential negative consequences of underage and problem drinking. It is through new and innovative partnerships committed to working together, investing in success, saving lives and enforcing the law that a "safer environment" can be developed. Working together with a common goal of decreasing underage and problem drinking, the target audiences listed above have the combined knowledge, skills and resources to create change.
